Wake up and.... Jazzy (Macedonia or Yugo?, 198?)

For the edification of the confused, the country ascription above is due to the fact the album was recorded in Macedonia (as you can see from the back cover) by Yugoslav (specifically, Serbian) musicians.  Macedonia is a small country just north of Greece which has nothing to do with the former Yugoslavia obviously, geographically, I say this due to some confusion in the comments below created by someone who probably doesn't understand English too well.  Or if they do understand English they don't read well, or perhaps, have trouble comprehending.  Or are simply out to catch me even at the cost of making a mistake.  Something like that.  At any rate this record was posted before on the website yugojazz -- which I figured was likely because it's hard to find any yugo-related material not yet posted online.  My mistake for thinking I had found something original!

This record reminds me a bit of Kjol's stuff with its intense fusionary output from a quartet of wonderful musicians and its 'updated' eighties style of breathy jazz.  I'm surprised it's not better known considering how good the music is.  There is some experimental stuff in here too, and very little of the conventional (jazzy or bluesy standards) -- if at all.

The start of track 5 sampled below features some really oddly ahead of its time distorted vocals behind the furiously fast pianist runs.  Notice the synths behind him blowing as if in a wind chamber.

Really remarkable find, again from the growing bin record store.  I will repeat how amazing it is to see so many rare and marvellous gems in one place and at such affordable prices compared to many an online record store.

The stars are Milos Petrovic the pianist, and Rade Bulatovic the bassist.  They are rounded out by Jovan Maljokovic on tenor sax and Miroslav Karlovic on drums.

Track 5, Mondovisia from Milos Petrovic:

Macedonia is Greek. So thats from ex Yugo or from FYROM.

Anonymous said...

Tristan,
Macedonia is Hellenic. You don't know that?

You mean FYROM.

Tristan Stefan said...

On the back of the record it says it was recorded in Macedonia, of course the musicians are serbian.
Sorry anon, I miss what you mean, where did I say anything about macedonia not being hellenic?
There is no year anywhere on it, but 1987 sounds right for sure, thanks Mr Morgan.

Oh I see, the problem was my use of 'or' in the title, I should have said: "recorded in Macedonia, but by serbian musicians" but I thought it easier simply to say "Maced. or Yugo" as provenance of the record -- well, at least "anon" got to insult me and my geographical erudition, how happy this must have made anonymous for that moment ... and how I prefer those insults to the positive comments, which are so few and far between!

Hi Mr.Tristan,
It's me again...for your information my real name is Anonymous & not "anon" as you like to call me.
On the other I can accept "anon" in case you call mayonnaise - "mayo" or magazine - "mag". Unfortunately, I haven't been baptised yet, so that makes Anonymous a true name.
By the way I really didn't mean to insult you, but if you took it that way...then I'm really sorry...for you.
However concerning both of your replies, I start to believe that maybe is a matter of your geographical erudition indeed!
Hope a speedy recovery....

argh! thanks isabel, I knew it would've been posted somewhere before ... oh well, I guess I'll stop posting albums on this blog now.

Dear Tristan,
my comment is just to show you the place and year of album, the post is just a review without download links.
please, don't take it in the wrong way...
your posts are always very welcome
my best wishes!

At the time of recording, Macedonia was a legit county of the former Yugoslavia. I´m guessing they have the same right to call themselves that as Turks have the right to call their part of Thrace eastern Thrace. But let´s not take politics and history here, nothing good can come of it. Let's enjoy quality music, no matter where it's from.

Hi , i have to say that i am very dissapointed.
Speaking for myself i undersatand very well the english language , i can assure you. This small country you mentioned is not Macedonia.
Is a part of the old Yugoslavia republic called Skopia or F.Y.R.O.M if you like. Macedonia is a part of Northern Greece and it always be.... NOT A SEPARATE NATION. !! Macedonians were Greek and not Serbs ! Please stop the Propaganda.... Those poor people are searching for an identity , i can understand that , but enough is enough ! In a few years we will hear that Alexander the Great wasn't greek and we has driving a ZASTAVA or a YUGO.
Please !!!!!!

Tristan,
thanks for this post. I really enjoyed it. I'm always amazed at the quality of the music that came out of Europe in the 70s that was never heard in the English speaking world.

Thanks for a great year of music, you have expanded my horizons and allowed a lot of unappreciated music to find an audience.

Tony

Thanks Tony. No worries, Isabel, I think you misunderstood me a bit.

Well, I think I've demonstrated in a few years posting here that my main fault is actually generosity, witness all the other posters who have given up posting rarities here due to nasty comments. And those who know me personally are well aware of this. Shakespeare in King Lear made it perfectly evident that the biggest downfall of generosity is ingratitude -- well, secondly, not speaking up. Some of us believe in a human society (in the future, that is) in which cooperation is the habit, and we look forward to such a world. On the other hand there are many people (who are a minority) who love the idea of taking advantage of the generous and never giving back, which is a reasonable strategy in life, and then, there are those, usually labelled conservative, who are cautious about the aforementioned freerider problem and therefore are very unwilling to be generous, understandably so in my view. And they are quite numerous. Therefore it is common to organize into private groups in which the known selfish are excluded or ostracized, and this is the direction human society has taken, in general. At any rate, I still believe a better world is possible, though it seems less and less likely (for environmental reasons), so I try to play it both ways. I've discussed before as well how mathematical modelling has suggested no 'freerider' percentage can really be reduced to zero since it's a viable evolutionary strategy (it's even found among social insects like ants and bees-- of course at a reduced percentage compared to humans). Hopefully you do understand what I'm saying.
There is another altogether different problem on this site in particular, which has existed since the beginning, wherein enemies of the site wish to stop us posting for their own personal reasons (to keep these records hidden from view from most people) which has really complicated matters for us, since negative comments hide behind anonymity, it makes things difficult to discern. So they will insult the posters constantly to try to stop them posting. Weird, huh?

Tristan Stefan said...

incidentally I find the percentages of nasty to positive comments quite interesting since the approx. 15 to 1 ratio is similar to what one sees in the mathematical modelling of selfish freeriders vs. the ordinary population... of course, this post is not representative, esp. since it's probably one person making all the negative comments

Tristan stop talking literary by writing novel-comments to convince people you're right.
It's not one person who disagree with your beliefs, there're many out there and you're deleting their comments to protect your image.
This is a geographical matter and has nothing to do with music.
It's not your fault if you didn't know that Macedonia is greek, but at least do not writing back trying to convince the audience that you're well educated...
At least think about yourself and your important role on this blog.

Anonymous, not tristan but i publish comments on this blog, since now i can see from blogger's panel that i published 10729 comments from the beginning. As long as your comment stay civil and/or no insults we do publish comments. in this post i deleted 1 comment that was something like: "shaved pigs has no idea of history".

Unlike tristan, i live this part of the world, while tristan read/watch things on news(papers), it was part of my life's reality. In this part of the world greeks has conflicts with macedonia, turks has conflicts with kurds, serbs has conflicts with bosnians, azeris has conflicts with armenians, palestineans has conflict with israel and so on..

and yes maybe tristan doesn't aware that you would show the same behavior whereever you see something tagged as macedonia. most youtube videos has tons of insults to each other of that nations when they use their country name as location. if tristan was from this region that we live in, he would choose simply to ignore your message with being aware of it comes from a right wing extrimist who s/he still thinks that s/he is living in the golory of middle-ages and dreams of the big emperor days.

the offical name of China, that we all call "China" thesedays, are People's Republic of China in other words, PRC
and the offical name of Macedonia that we all call "Macedonia" thesedays are Republic of Macedonia in other words FYROM.
I don't see problem here, and no matter how much you comment here and there, people will select and use the easy path: Macedonia for FYROM.

by using history card upon people, you may still think that you are living in the age of countries (kings, and soultans maybe?) but those countries we know of faded away long time ago. now you are from the republic of coca-cola, ford, google etc.. not only for your country, most of countries' faith is between the lips of Goldman Sachs' ceo.. it is the age of bosses and ceos. they got you and i by the balls. and the people who live in this part of the world should wake up to this reality asap otherwise the faith of a x nation won't be any different than the y nation, we will all die together in dirt that we all create.

Nahavanda,

Nobody in these comments spoke about right wing extrimists & dreams of the big emperor days.
These are maybe your ideas....

I believe all humans in this planet must have equal rights, but also the reason that this world is beautiful is because people's uniqueness. Different cultures, customs, colours, civilization, nature...all these are composing what we call "life on earth".

Now, if you want to live in countries which are fading away you have all the right to do it, since you have the right to drink coca-cola, eating McDonalds and driving a Ford car...

It's all in people's consciousness & criticism.

Seriously guys, if you spot a mistake can't you just simply point it out and offer some correct information as you know it, it in stead of starting uncivil discourse and trolling behavior?

The owner of this blog goes through the trouble of presenting music some of us would not have been exposed to and thus provides some form of education, and if there is some info attached to it that seem incorrect, go right ahead and return the favor of education and correct it.

We are all here to learn (I would hope), not to start flame wars, especially not due to nationalistic sentiments. Mistakes will be made (and European border disputes aren't particularly transparent) so do a kindness and teach, don't argue.

Also, try reading comments for their words and content, not your perceived tone. You may read a snark whereas there is no snark intended by the commenter.

Just be open minded (without it falling out) m'kay?

(Directed to pretty much everybody here)
